At Tahara City, we took a good look at the environmental problems facing the region, such as globaI warming, the energy crisis and other problems with the earth's environment as well as deterioration in the quality of municipal water supplies, waste treatment and the waste of idle farmlands, and decided on the concept Eco garden city. Tahara's citizens and government are working unitedly to build a city that is gentle on the environment. This concept, seIected in the Japanese government's ''Environmental symbiosis city building model proposal'' and ''Environmental action planning modeI project,'' has culminated in the creation of 7 major projects which utilize the energy of the strong winds that are unique to Atsumi Peninsula, the abundant sunlight, agriculture based resources and waste products, etc. and in addition, take advantage of these resources to develop city building projects that reduce the load on the environment as well as targeting continuous regional development that harmonizes with the environment.
